Creating Tunga

Junior Young Women and Senior Young Women classes had their first excursion for the term to Munupi Art to observe the process of making a tunga, a traditional hand-crafted bark basket.

This term, the JYW class is designing, planning, and creating tungas as part of the Tiwi College Curriculum integrated projects. By the end of this unit, the young women will have worked in small groups to create a tunga and produce a video describing the process, including interviews with some of our Elders.

Students will also be harvesting the bark and string needed to make the tungas. Great work, ladies, and thank you to the art centre for a wonderful day!
