Junior Rangers Protecting Tiwi Turtles

Junior Rangers from Tiwi College have been busy at Imalu Beach, helping scientists study Olive Ridley turtles - one of Australia’s rarest species! Working with Tiwi Rangers, the Australian Institute of Marine Science, and Charles Darwin University, they dug up nests to count hatched eggs and learn more about turtle survival.

Camera traps revealed that goannas, dingoes, pigs, seagulls, bandicoots, and crocodiles all prey on eggs and hatchlings — with feral pigs being the biggest threat. This research will help develop new ways to protect Tiwi turtles for future generations.
