Learning the Art of Tiwi Weaving
Weaving is a vital part of Tiwi culture, connecting people to their heritage, community, and creativity. Last week, Tiwi College Junior Rangers began learning traditional weaving from local experts Molly Munkara, Nina Black, and Elizabeth Tipiloura.
Molly shared, “It’s important we pass down knowledge from our ancestors to our kids, so they can carry it on for the next generation.”
In the first workshop, students collected and prepared pandanus leaves and gathered Arrinkininga roots for dye. Next term, they’ll learn how to weave their creations.
